Why buy antique and vintage pieces?

I appreciate that I may be biased, but in my opinion you buy a piece of antique furniture, or vintage studio pottery, or a beautiful painting, because you fall in love with it. The realisation that you may never see something you like as much ever again, search though you may, means that you have to have it, or live with the regret when someone else beats you to it. It isn’t like buying a mass produced table or sofa from a glossy shop on a retail park - there is only one of it, not thousands. So you buy with your heart more than your head.

Each piece is unique. Even something as simple and readily available as, for example, 19th century pine chests of drawers, are all individual, shaped not only by where and when they were made, but by the timber used, the finish applied (and sometimes removed again) and the life they have lived. One hundred to two hundred years of use gives each chest of drawers its own patina and character. We’ve never had two the same, even though they may be similar in size and style.

An antique or vintage piece of furniture will give any room character and bring what I can only describe as a softness to a home. It might be the mellow colour of aged timber, or the corners that have been gently rounded by use, but if you buy something you love it will enhance your home in every single way, simply because you love it. It might be the focal point of a room or something that fades into the background and looks as though it has always been there. It might be a collection of small quirky vintage prints that bring life to a corner and always provoke a conversation. It might be a hand-made studio pottery vase in an impossible to resist turquoise glaze that takes pride of place on your sideboard. Or it might just be a worn wooden chopping board that leans up at the back of your kitchen worktop and makes you smile every time you use it.

You’ll never regret buying something that you love!
