Vintage Japanese Kutani Shishi Foo Dog Statue

£125.00

A beautifully decorated Japanese Kutani style ceramic Shishi or Foo Dog statue, standing with one paw on a red ball and holding a sword in his mouth. I understand that the Shishi is a guardian figure, believed to ward off evil spirits and invite good fortune, and are placed in both homes and temples. The ball represents the world and he is protecting it. We believe this figure dates from around the 1980’s…

Condition: No damage that I can find. The statue was nicotine stained when we acquired it and despite much washing and scrubbing (I have a glamorous life!) there are still a few remnants in harder to reach crevices. The red tassel is a little faded in places but these are often missing so it is nice to have it present. A charming figure which I am sure contains much more meaning and symbolism than I have mentioned above.
