There is some information on the back of the painting which reads as follows:
“Peter Newcombe was born in 1943 at Blisworth in Northamptonshire. He studied illustration and etching at Northampton School of Art, where he won a travelling scholarship. Samuel Palmer was a strong influence in his early work.
Newcombe’s work first came to public attention in 1968 with a set of twelve large drawings illustrating ‘The Shepherds Calendar’ by John Clare, these being featured on BBC television. In 1970 he was awarded a major art grant from the Elizabeth T. Greenshield Foundation in Canada. It was at this time he began exhibiting widely in London, including at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. In 1972 his work was included in Michael Shepherd’s ‘Critics Choice’ exhibition at Tooths. In 1979 he designed a set of flower stamps for the Post Office, and from these a film about his work called ‘Spring Quartet’ was made. His paintings have been widely used by Shell for the calendars and are also in private collections throughout the world.
The subject matter of Peter Newcombe’s paintings is gathered almost entirely from the small area of Northamptonshire in which he lives. They are intense studies of landscape, weather and flowers in all seasons. He has a particular interest in old buildings and the wild flowers which used to be so prevalent in our countryside but are now fast disappearing. His recent work captures the mood of the English countryside, a mastery accomplished with such assurance that it must herald his finest painting to date.”
