When we acquired this chair it had a horrible varnish on it, so we stripped it but it still didn’t look great, so it got put in the storage area and forgotten about - until I got the urge to paint something! I used to paint a lot, mostly botanical art, but no longer have the time. I do find it very enjoyable and relaxing though, and after what have been a stressful few months for various reasons I was itching for a project. I came across this chair again, thought it would lend itself to something folk-art-ish, so decided to give it a go. I used snowdrops as the central motif as they were just flowering at the time and I’ve always loved them. The base colour is Little Greene ‘Bassoon’ over a red ochre undercoat. Other colours used are Little Greene ‘Ambleside’ and ‘Three Farm Green’, along with the same red ochre as the undercoat, white muted with Raw Umber, and a very small amount of Farrow & Ball ‘Stiffkey Blue’. The paint finish has been lightly distressed and then sealed with three coats of matte varnish (which was meant to be totally matte but actually has a little sheen to it, which on reflection is no bad thing).
Condition: The left hand arm rest is a little loose - there is some old damage to it which we have tried to stabilise but it still has some movement, though is secure and doesn’t affect the use of the chair. Otherwise in good solid condition. As described above, the paint finish has been lightly distressed and has been sealed with several coats of varnish.
