The latest Antique & Unique Studio project if this vintage cupboard/wardrobe.
I always like mid-height cupboards - they provide useful storage without overwhelming a room. This cupboard is constructed from pine and plywood, and we believe dates from the mid twentieth century. It came from a cottage in our village, where it was used as a wardrobe in a spare bedroom. Inside it is fitted out as a wardrobe; a full depth shelf with a hanging rail suspended below it, and a smaller shelf sitting at the back of the cupboard above the main shelf. It would be straightforward to remove the hanging rail and add more shelves for more general storage if desired. The door has a lock and key, which acts as the handle.
I have painted the cupboard in Annie Sloan ‘Aubusson Blue’ with the scrolling leaf decoration in ‘Old White’. The design is a development of the idea for my Tiny Leaves Mirror, with the leaves starting from a single point in the bottom left hand corner and then branching out across all sides of the cupboard. There is a complimentary design on the inside of the cupboard door. I have lightly distressed the paint on edges and around the bottom where it would naturally receive wear, and then finished it with two coats of clear wax, with very lightly applied dark wax in places to give it a slightly aged appearance.
Condition: Freshly painted as detailed above. The door doesn’t shut perfectly flush and the bottom corner on the handle side sticks out slightly when shut, otherwise in very good used condition.
